So, I will admit I was skeptical at first with the whole 'Ebola' thing, but the authors ability to write s*** that would actually happen blew me away. He definitely goes into depth with how frightening and horrible some people would become if this situation ever happened! I've written a few apocalyptic novels myself, and I don't even think I kept it as real as this author did. It's a wild read and kept me up extremely late, I kept saying 'one more chapter'. This book omits a good 'end of the world' book for anyone looking to fill their need. I've read a few horrible ones on here, but this one is on my top list! Look forward to getting the next!

4.0 out of 5 stars A work of fiction dealing with the horrors of illness ..., March 4, 2015 By jon williams - See all my reviews

This review is from: The Woodman: Book One. The Roads of Hell (Kindle Edition)

A work of fiction dealing with the horrors of illness and fever. The relationships and conflicts that are well treated in this pleasure to read ebook. Well worth the reading at twice the price. Get a feel and flavor of southern England in the locations.

5 of 5 stars

Read from February 16 to 21, 2015

The world is a very dark place following The Death, a massive attack by Ebola that spreads through the world, and decimates the human population. Survivors are few and far between, scattered across farms, traveling groups, and small communities trying to build a future from their loses. The Woodman has become a figure of legend, even as soon as three years after the world came to an end.

Haunting to woods of southern England, and tied to the community of Coast Town by the very mystery that sees him and his father being chased from their home, Duke takes up his father's mantel and tries to be worthy of the name.

Into his life comes the army of the Black Pope, and he is forced to return home to warn the very people who turned him away...

This story is full of characters that live outside the usual black and white of heroes and villains. The twists and turns of the plot draw you on from page to page, especially when building up to the revelations of what lay in the past, and what is still to come. This is the first in what looks to be a very dark and promising series. There is now way that I'll resist picking up the rest of the books.

"Thoroughly enjoyed The Woodman. Fast paced book which keeps you turning the pages. Well done to the author. Just hope nothing like Ebola happens in real life, wiping out whole communities at a time. Can't wait to read book 2 to see what happens to Duke."

4 stars By Lex Allen

"Author G.H. Bright has written an excellent post-apocalyptic novel that resonates with verisimilitude and true to life characters. Set in a fictitious version of the United Kingdom, the story begins after a global outbreak of a mutated Ebola virus that killed a very large majority of the world’s populations.

Duke Woods, aka The Woodman, is among the few survivors. A loner, who had lived most his life in the woods with his father, Duke is an unforgettable character that starts this story as a seventeen year old boy and almost immediately, circumstance and violent life or death situations make him a man. Duke is a gentle soul with strong personal beliefs and a stalwart defender of good against evil."

The Woodman, Book 3 The Gates of Hell: The Gates of Hell (Kindle Edition)

This book carries on logically and brings in different story lines to keep the reader interested. I for one am looking forward to Book 4 and feel an epic film in the making!

harrowing and disturbing, partly due to recent events in the real world. A virus outbreak, a little similar to Stephen King's the stand, wipes out huge chunks of people. But this is mainly a tale about Woods, and his struggle against the black pope. It's full of rich derails, but still leaves a lot to the reader's imagination. can't wait to see where this goes next!

This book was action packed from page one. There are several villains in this book, all of them seem impossible to beat. The author explores human nature and its survival instincts, keeping the reader guessing until the very last line. What happens when a virus knocks out civilization almost over night. The Woodman is a character that you cheer for from the beginning. There is some mystery about his past, but no doubt he is our hero. The story definitely makes you think and hope to God something like this never happens. It was a scary read for me because of the devastation we read about, but the underlying message of survival and good triumphing over evil is an important one. What people can do when they work together for the common good can be amazing.

I bought this book because I used to know the author when he was a Marine Engineer! It surprised me & kept me interested all through. As I live in the area of the story, it is easy to visualise the scenes. Well done Grolly

"With fairly fast moving action, its easy to feel drawn into

the story.

The chain starts to unravel as a well developed plot is revealed.

Characters come alive and together with a realistic depiction

of UK village life its easy to visualise yourself there.

In the first few pages the emotions are building to boiling

point, with a sense that there's no way out."

4 stars An accurate picture of the human condition

By Linda Thackeray on 10 February 2015

Format: Kindle Edition

If you throw a series of pebbles into a pond, what happens? You create numerous ripples that ultimately intersect each other. The plot of GH Bright’s novel, An Unusual Chain of Events, illustrates with fractal intricacy how one brutal night of violence can have far reaching consequences that no one could have imagined.

After being initiated by a prologue that depicts a vicious attack, the book is broken up into four parts where we are introduced to a host of characters that might seem comfortable in the potboilers of the 1980s. We meet David, the repressed businessman, his bored and insecure wife Sally, whose crumbing marriage forms the bedrock on which the rest of the story in built. Neither are likeable characters and one can be forgiven for thinking David has a reason for his behaviour but when the truth is revealed, it invokes genuine surprise.

Each act introduces us to a new set of characters, including Sally’s brother Dean, the drug dealing mobster. Dean returns to England for Sally’s sake only to find himself faced with betrayal and a fight for his life in a gang war. Through Dean we meet Sian, Sally’s friend, estranged after her marriage to David. The third act leads into the introduction of Jo and her band the White Swans. In the midst of all this, DI Harper makes his emergence and may be as much a pebble in the pond as the rape that begins this story.

I enjoyed reading this book and getting to know the latticework of characters the author is creating. Dean and DI Harper are standouts while Sally’s insecurity is tiresome when compared to Jo’s contentment and Sian’s sarcasm. The hunt for the killer which takes up much of the plot is also quite gripping and I did a binge read to get to the end to see what happens.

The book also makes an admirable attempt to explore the often taboo subject of male rape and its effect on its victims. One cannot help but empathise with the killer’s motivations when one realises the source of it, even if only serves to further damage an already dangerous psyche. It speaks to the ability of the author to paint his characters in shades of grey.

There are depictions of graphic sex but it does not ever gratuitous and serves to explain the motivations of some characters. If I had a complaint, I felt that the book might have been structured better. The gangland war with Dean and the Turks felt too long and added little to the overall plot. The introduction of Jo and the White Swans is not as seamless as it should be and some connections strained credibility. Sian’s revelation that she knew the truth about David without revealing it to Sally was difficult to swallow.

Other than that, this was a delicious read and I was very satisfied when I reached the end. The characters have messy, flawed lives but it makes them relatable since it’s an accurate picture of the human condition.

I found this book very interesting and very good description of the terrible time the poor soldiers had in the trenches, and all the suffering they had to endure.

True Love Never Dies ~ so the saying goes. Those who have loved and lost know it to be true. Visiting the War Tunnels ( German Underground Hospital ) in Jersey, a tragedy stands out amongst the many stories told there - that of a young local girl and her doomed love for a German Soldier. It has doubtless inspired this story. The tale asks the question "what if love survives despite the odds and endures a lifetime lived in the ignorance of the truth? " Written informally as an old lady may well recount the tale herself, the central character is forced, by chance, to confront a past she would rather forget but in so doing reveals a truth she would have hardly dared to hope was real.
